33 Miles are a popular American contemporary Christian all male group from Franklin, Tennessee. The band was formed in 2005 at Brentwood, TN, USA and released their debut album, 33Miles, two years later in 2007. The band’s distinctive musical form combines elements of Pop and Christian Rock with a strong and easily recognizable Country element.

33 Miles comprise three talented musicians: Jason Barton, Chris Lockwood and Collin Stoddard. Jason is the group’s lead vocalist and is from Gilbert, Louisiana. Chris, from Mobile, Alabama, provides backing vocals and plays the guitar; while Collin, from Craig, Colorado, also provides backing vocals and is an
accomplished keys and piano player. The band is heavily influenced by the church and each of the members is married, managing to combine solid Christian family life with a busy and demanding touring schedule.

The group’s first album, 33 Miles was released in April 10, 2007 by INO records, reaching number 8 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers album chart. This debut album also made a creditable 16th place on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart.

The band’s name was derived from the number of years Jesus Christ lived before being crucified and this theme has had a powerful and enduring influence in the life of the group and in their musical expression.

Jason Barton, in describing the redeeming power of Jesus, says: "He was a friend to the friendless, He loved the unlovable and He gave of Himself selflessly by dying on the cross in our place so that we could live forever." Small Group Worship – How To Choose Songs For Small Group Worship

Choosing songs for small group worship need not be a difficult or daunting task. There are three factors you need to always take into consideration in order to select songs for small group worship.

Factor 01: Know what songs are familiar to your small group.

Why is this factor important? Because in small group worship you are better off using at the most one song that is unfamiliar to the people in each worship session. In order to follow this guideline you need to know what songs are familiar to your group members.

If your small group is based at a local church (made up of members of the same church), this becomes a lot simpler. Pay attention to the songs are used for the worship service and take note of what songs regularly come up. These will be more familiar to your people. If your small group is a para-church group, with members from different churches, you will need to pay attention to what songs have been regularly used for the worship sessions in previous meetings. Looking out for this will give you a good sense of what songs are dependable and usable in your small group worship times.

Factor 02: Know what songs are sing-able and what are not.

Songs that are easy for the members to sing are a must. We measure the success of small group worship by the standard of the following Scripture passage:

2 Chronicles 5:12-15 – All the Levites who were musiciansAsaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relativesstood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets. The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as *with one voice*, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: "He is good; his love endures forever."

Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God. (NIV, emphasis mine)

So if you want to make it easier to unify the praises of the people, choosing songs that are easily sung by your group members is crucial for your success.

Please don’t assume that what is used for your church service or 1000 heard in ‘worship’ albums will always be useable in a small group setting. Worship albums are usually created by people with a high level of singing ability and music skill. These people are therefore able to sing what the average church member can’t. This may not be obvious when a difficult song is attempted during a church service, since there are more people to cover up any problems, but it becomes painfully clear when attempting such songs at a small group meeting.

Factor 03: Know what your musician(s) skill level and work accordingly.

If you yourself are not a skilled musician, or if the musicians who volunteer to serve are not highly skilled, you need to choose your songs based on what your musicians can manage. It is very difficult for many amateur musicians to learn more than one or two new songs a week. If you only have a pianist in your group, recognise that it becomes tougher to attempt the guitar based songs. Likewise if your only musician is a guitarist, he or she may have more difficulty making a piano-based song work.

Be aware of this factor, and work closely with your musicians as you choose songs for your worship session. Communicate with them early about what songs you wish to use for the next meeting, so that they will have more time to practice and work out any kinks in the songs or the song selection.

A pivotal point in the history of the industry the the 70′s was the "Jesus Movement". This set a new mark where the industry actually became more popular due to the simple fact that the lyrics and music were in sync with the secular music industry. A revival was sparked.

Into the 80′s the Jesus Movement had started to fade, yet another group of artists held up the Christian industry and came to the forefront of it. Rock and metal music, was inching its way into the Christian home of music, as the secular industry showed its popularity. Some early known rockers included Petra, Stryper, Bloodgood, and Undercover. Each had their own unique rock style ranging from rock to metal to punk.

The 1990′s brought a broad range of new music such as rap, urban gospel, contemporary country, rock and pop. Because the industry was deemed worthy, larger labels began promoting the music in a large way. Artists such as Carman, dcTalk, and Kirk Franklin, Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day and Amy Grant stepped into the spotlight. Carman was noted in Billboard Magazine naming him "Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year". New band dcTalk released an album that had the highest first week sales of any release ever. Kirk Franklin sold over one million of his first gospel album. Steven Curtis Chapman held eleven spots on the top 100 songs end-of -the-decade airplay chart. Third Day was noted as one of the best rock bands ever. Amy Grant blended her Christian songs in mainstream music. This all led the way for the continued success of the Christian music industry today.

The 21st century came and was no different. More sub genres grew and streamlined into mainstream music even more. Some of these artists are on the forefront still to this day. Barlow Girl is known as a sister trio rocker band expressing their faith through harmonious vocals. Casting Crowns is known as the band playing the most on all Christian radio formats and the fastest to reach Platinum album status of the CCM (Christ Community Music) artists. Jeremy Camp set the record for having three gold albums, along with nine number one radio back to back hits.

So it is easy to conclude currently that this modern age of Christian rock has introduced a unique new genre that appeals to the masses. Christian music is not just music for people of faith, it is actually way more. No longer seen as a "niche", it’s introduction into mainstream music has led it’s way to greater success. The phenomenon continues to grow bounds every year, including different musical types of sub genres for anyone’s tastes. It has transformed people’s opinions toward music, and people are more open to the Christian style. Because the Christian industry exhibits such amazing sounds as the mainstream industry, people tend not to worry if the band is labeled Christian. They only worry about the musical talent and vocal sounds, opposed to the lyrics.

When choosing to buy Christian music, whether you are new to the whole scene or a seasoned listener, you will need to discover what your musical preferences are. You can then use the internet to not only search for example, "Christian country", but find information about the artists, as well as listen to songs before purchasing the cd or buying the mp3 download. You can also visit a local Christian music store and browse the selections and listen to some clips. There are also local Christian radio stations airing round the clock. The choices are endless but the end result is great music that you will be so happy you decided to buy.

Aaron Shust is a Contemporary Christian Music singer and songwriter whose music resounds with a powerful sense of meaning to life, offering hope in the knowledge that we are part of an infinitely bigger whole within the body of Christ and that through His resurrection we are offered redemption. Christ’s emphatic triumph resounds powerfully and majestically throughout Shust’s music.

Shust spent his formative years near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and began playing the piano at an early age, mastering the guitar during his teenage years, then heavily influenced by the music of the times.

Shust’s early musical expression found an outlet when he started to pour out his feelings about leaving home for the first time to study music at Toccoa Falls College, Georgia where he was heavily influenced by European classical forms and also by more contemporary artists of the sixties. The young artist’s early musical career began in the campus halls of Toccoa Falls College where he entertained fellow students. At this point he also began to give live performances in churches and venues.

A churchgoer all his life, Shust is a worship leader at Perimeter Church in Atlanta. Outside his church, this devout Christian songwriter travels extensively throughout the United States, visiting and leading worship in numerous Christian venues and churches, imparting a sense of hope and love in his music.

Shust recorded his popular album, Anything Worth Saying in 2004, produced by Dan Hannon. Hannon also produced a host of other songs for Schust which he later presented to Mike McQuary’s Atlanta based Brash Music label. On hearing Schust’s songs for the first time, the record label quickly signed the promising young songwriter, even though they had no previous experience promoting Christian music.

Schust’s most successful single to date was his second single release, "My Savior My God", which was released in January 2006 and went on to achieve countless milestones including over seven months in the Top 5 on the R&R Christian AC chart; number 1 in the iTunes Christian and Gospel chart for over 12 weeks and second most played song of 2006 on Christian CHR radio. In recognition of his impact on the Contemporary Christian music scene, Shust was named songwriter of the year at the thirty-eighth annual GMA Dove Awards in 2007 and gained further recognition by having his song "My Savior My God" proclaimed song of the year for 2007. The GMA also awarded Shust two additional Dove Awards, naming him New Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Aaron Schust lives with his wife Sarah in Duluth, Georgia and the couple are blessed with two boys, Daniel and Nicholas. The sudden arrival and impact of Aaron Schust in the Christian music scene has few equals and many in the industry along with millions of devoted fans look forward to many more years of empowering music from this talented Christian singer and songwriter.
